Abis Mal is one of the main antagonists in the Aladdin television series, first seen as the secondary antagonist in the direct-to-video film The Return of Jafar.

Background[]

Personality[]

Abis Mal tends to be dim-witted, selfish and, at times, childish. He misses things easily and relies on henchmen to fight rather than himself. Aside from this, he can be a cruel villain. He cares nothing for his henchmen and murders them if they fail a mission. His treatment of his minions if they succeed in a mission was no better, either, as he frequently keeps the lion's share of their plunder, and often gives the minions a tiny purse-bag with a minimum amount of coins as their reward at best. His right-hand man Haroud often assist him in his plots. Abis Mal is easily tricked by Haroud to do something he wishes not to. Abis Mal holds a small knowledge of magical items and uses this against his enemies. Most of his plans are genius, but his small mind ruins it for himself. His schemes are primarily directed at gaining riches and/or power. He is more successful than his rival Aladdin in terms of wealth and clothing. As well as this he is also more successful than Aladdin in terms of henchmen - whilst Aladdin only has one, Abis Mal has many. Despite his dim-wittedness, he has also demonstrated some sense of clarity and common sense, as demonstrated by his nearly giving the final wish to Jafar: He was about to give the wish when he interrupted himself and asked Jafar how he can be so sure that Jafar will let him keep the treasure after giving the wish instead of having the treasure disappear on him after giving it (it is implied that he asked this due to him being placed into various death traps by Jafar when he wished for things, or even considered wishing for it in the case of a treasure chest).

Abis Mal's schemes are motivated by the stereotypical villainous desires of riches, power, and revenge, and his constant scheming and ambition are surprisingly dangerous, as he has often found the means and methods, often magical, to carry out his schemes. However, his cowardice or stupidity often hamper his efforts.

He also seems to hold a strong affinity for hats, having a particular taste for the Sultan's hat as he emphasizes it during any plot he has for domination of Agrabah.

Physical Description[]

Abis Mal wears more Arab-style clothing, a turban, and red shoes whilst Aladdin goes barefoot and doesn't wear much clothing except for a waistcoat, belt, fez, and pants.

Powers and abilities[]

Having no exceptional skills mentally or physically, Abis Mal usually relies on his guards, Haroud and whatever backwater magic he is able to get his hands on, using magical spells and objects for whatever plot he has in store with little knowledge on how they may work or their practicality.
